When filmmaker Sam Dunn used to be a teen and aspiring bass player rising up in Victoria, B.C., he gravitated in direction of the song of Canadian prog rock band Lope.

“I spent hours in my mattress room, you know slaving away, attempting to learn all these aspects,” Dunn told Gloria Macarenko, host of CBC’s On The Whisk. 

Years later, when Dunn went on to co-stammer the definitive documentary on the band — Lope: Beyond the Lighted Stage — he felt lucky to employ time with the notoriously non-public Neil Peart, who died Tuesday after a prolonged fight with brain cancer. 

“Neil wasn’t somebody that gave hundreds of interviews,” Dunn acknowledged. “[But] they relied on us to expose their legend.”

Peart, alongside with participants Geddy Lee on keys and Alex Lifeson on guitar, took Lope to shiny success — Grammy Award nominations, Juno Awards, an induction the Rock and Roll Corridor of Repute — with out ever compromising their advanced and advanced musicianship.

“They liked the song that they performed. They no doubt failed to compromise on the song that they performed,” Dunn acknowledged. 

“They did issues that no hundreds of band had no doubt performed, bid that since the days of Shuffle and Genesis and King Crimson. But pointless to claim the adaptation used to be they were ours. They were Canadian.”

Ash Pearson, drummer with Three Inches of Blood, a Vancouver-basically based mostly fully heavy steel band that disbanded in 2015, says his entire band counted themselves as Lope superfans.

Pearson, who has quiet many treasures linked to the band— including their vinyl recordsdata, a honest of stamps honouring the band, and Peart’s non-fiction writing — says whereas he’s unhappy Peart is long past, he’s confident his legacy will dwell on.
